The Badui (they call themself as Kanekes) are the descendants of the Pajajaran princes. Their population of between 5,000 and 8,000 is centered in the Kendeng mountains at an elevation of 300-500 meters above sea level. Their homeland in West Java is contained in just 50 km² of hilly forest area 120 km from Jakarta, Indonesia's megalopolis of high-rises and fast cars. The Baduis are divided into two sub-groups; the Badui Dalam (Inner Badui), and the Badui Luar (Outer Badui). No foreigners were allowed to meet the Inner Badui, though the Outer Badui do foster some limited contacts with the outside world.
